Scouts Commit to a Greener, More Inclusive World

 

 

What an eventful summer it has been! These past months have all been about protecting the environment and building friendship bridges across borders, from Croatia to Finland, we gather some extraordinary stories of young and Scouts who work tirelessly to save the planet and give a positive example to their peers! Scouts were also busy during July celebrating diversity and multiculturalism at World Scout Jamboree 2019, one of the biggest youth events in the world. Read all about their actions and discover more of the highlights of this summer/fall below!

 

 

Celebrating Diversity at World Scout Jamboree 2019

 

On 26th July, over 40.000 young people from all around the world met in West Virginia, USA for the 24th World Scout Jamboree to celebrate diversity, each other's culture and enjoy the wonderful nature in one of the world's largest educational youth movements. On such occasion, one would expect to see many colourful attires, traditional costumes and various multicultural festivities celebrating unique heritage and folklore, from Japanese Kimono to Scottish kilts or Korean hanboks. Over 15.000 European Scouts had the chance to create life-long friendships with people from all around the world. 2 Million Scouts Gathered Online This Month To Whom Did You Connect

 

JOTA-JOTI is the world's largest digital Scout event taking place online and over the air, through radio. The educational event brings together more than 2 million Scouts every year in October for a weekend of Scouting and friendship. Young people learn about communications, technology and are able to connect with fellow Scouts from over 170 countries. Pretty impressive, right? Discover more JOTA-JOTI here. The Reforestation Project of the Croatian Scouts wins at Effie Europe!

 

A reforestation campaign resulting in the plantation of more than 25,000 trees in 8 weeks, earned the Croatian Scouts the most prestigious award for marketing communication effectiveness in Europe, the Effie Europe award. On the 16th of October they won the award for Positive Change Europe- Environmental Good, if interested more about their environmental actions click here.

 

 

Finnish Scout Writes To Prime Minister about Climate Action and Receives a Surprising Answer

 

Ever wondered how it is like corresponding with the Prime Minister of your country? Well, a young Scout from Finland wanted to share her concerns regarding climate change after her group carried out a number of environmental awareness activities, She decided to reach the highest decision-maker in Finland. Annie, wished to speak with "an influential person", regarding the solutions to combat climate change and spread awareness among her peers. Danish Scouts Come Up with New Environmental Strategy

 

Danish Scouts mobilised themselves with a new strategy regarding sustainability and environmental issues. A series of actions to combat wasteful habits and find doable solutions are implemented in a half year review plan. KFUM-Spejderne I Danmark wishes to address the important issue of sustainability within local communities and to call people to action. The Danish Scouts launched a series of eco-friendly activities with a fierce determination to engage communities and spread awareness in combating climate change. Invitation to Expats: 20 November / European Parliament / Rights of the Child

Dear Expat Scouts,

 

As mentioned at the Expat Scout Council last week, please find below the invitation to the event in the European Parliament to celebrate 30 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The UN definition of child is up to 18 years old.

 

It would be great if some of our Scouts could participate. It is a Wednesday afternoon so potentially possible?

 

 

 

INVITATION   In the 30 years since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the lives of millions of children have been improved through the progressive recognition of rights and fulfilment of obligations enshrined within the Convention. It inspired governments to change laws, policies and practices. Protecting and improving Child's rights proved to be a driven force of sustainable development and growth in several part of the world.   Despite remarkable progress, the Convention is still not fully implemented or widely known and understood. Millions of children continue to experience abuses of their rights. They are denied adequate health care, nutrition, education and protection from violence. They are forced to leave school and work, get married, enrolled in wars...   Global changes such as digital technology, environmental challenges, persistent conflict and large-scale movement of population are affecting childhood. Children's rights are threaten while at the same time new opportunities emerge to uphold/fulfil them.   The High-Level Conference on the 30 anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child will take place 20 November 2019 in the Plenary Chamber of the European Parliament in Brussels. The conference themes thus will focus on:   •           sharing lessons and good practices in integrating child rights principles into national  legislation; •           addressing discrimination and barriers to the full enjoyment of child rights including              socio-economic inequalities/disabilities among children; •           mainstreaming of a child-rights approach; •           discussing the changing nature of armed conflicts and its impact on children's rights              and future.       Participants under 18 years of age, should use the form below to register. The authorisation of a legal representative is required to complete registration.

SCOUTING DAY        20 February 2019, Brussels  Dear Friends & Partners, The European Scout Region and the Belgian Scouts "Les Scouts" are happy to invite you to an afterwork reception on 20 February, 2019 also known as "Scouting Day" for our Movement. It will take place at the House of European History , Rue Belliard 135, 1000 Brussels, starting from 18.30 till 20.30 pm. The reception will be themed under the topic of Active Citizenship as part of our My Europe My Say project. The My Europe My Say project aims to boost youth's civic engagement in the context of the upcoming parliamentary elections.  Ahmad Alhendawi, the Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement and the former UN Secretary-General Envoy for Youth will be present and will give a short opening speech.  Throughout the reception, you will be offered the opportunity to engage in informal exchanges with several youth Scout delegates who have been actively involved in key burning issues such as social inclusion, climate action and youth participation.  For security reasons, we would kindly ask you to confirm your participation by registering to the event before 10 February.
